“Young Changemakers” Vol. 2: Generation of Freedom

We did it again! From 24th – 28th April 2017 the German and Georgian participants of the Erasmus+ Youth Exchange “Young Changemakers” organised by Arbeit und Leben Thüringen and Youth Association DRONI in cooperation with Radio F.R.E.I. met again in Tbilisi. We had a full week in which we learnt more about Fake News and discovered Georgia.
We started the week with a City Quest in different groups. Each group had a special topic, which they had to tackle and find corresponding sounds. During a guided city tour the participants learnt more about the rich and long history and the vibrant present of Tbilisi. A typical Georgian Supra in the evening gave a tasteful insight into the Georgian cuisine.
During workshops on Sound Design the group learnt more about how to work with sounds. The workshops were conducted by professional sound designers and composers.

And again, we had exciting study visits. We visited the Media Development Foundation (MDF) and learnt more about how they are detecting Fake News and reporting about it. At Radio Free Europe/Radio Tavisupleba the journalists told us about the history of the radio station, their work and how important it is to have independent media outlets. And we also visited Coda Story: against the trend of fast-moving media this online platform deals with several topics for a longer time period and stays on the stories. Their main topics are Disinformation Crisis, Migration Crisis and LGBTQ Crisis. We had very interesting discussions with all of the journalists and researchers.

But of course we also produced our own media products in mixed groups. Recordings the participants prepared as a homework and new sounds and interviews they recorded in Tbilisi were used to create some interesting pieces. We presented them to a big audience at a public event at DIVE Bar in Fabrika on the last day of our meeting. You can listen to all of them right here:

Höhlen und Steine:
Inspired by a visit to Uplistsikhe some participants of our Youth Exchange created this forward-going techno track with the title “Höhlen und Steine” (Caves and Stones). The whole track consists of natural sounds and recordings.

Open the Gate:
During the Cold War the world was divided into two parts. This division became especially visible in Berlin, where the Wall separated a city, a country and two systems. When the wall fell everybody was talking about peace and freedom. But what is freedom? And what happened to these values in times of refugee crisis, austerity and building up new walls?

Old and Young:
Georgians reflect on the different situations between the younger and older generation. What are the differences between growing up in the 1990ies in Georgia and today? How are the opportunities differing and is everything better today?

Freedom Generation:
The young generation in Georgia and Eastern Germany is the first generation who didn’t grew up in a socialist or communist state, but in democracies. How do they reflect on that?

Georgian Music:
This piece is all about music. Learn more about the street music scene in Tbilisi, Irakli Charkviani, Georgian folk music and polyphonic singing.

Freedom of Speech:
A piece about the freedom of speech in Georgia – comparing Soviet times and today. Hear different opinions and views on this topic from young Georgians.
