Fav places Tbilisi: Social Book-Bar

At the beginning of September, Youth Association DRONI opened the unique social bar on a terrace of the office on Shartava street. In the interview, Giorgi Kikalishvili, the head of the organization introduces the purpose and the vision of Social Book Bar – a space for learning, studying, getting new experience and knowledge.

What is the idea behind newly opened Social Book Bar?
It is not only a bar, it is not only a physical place, there is the whole concept behind it. We have been training young people to learn how to work in a bar, café or restaurant. The opportunity was primary given to students from regions and IDPs, who study and live in Tbilisi. We wanted to equip them with some new competences, new skills and knowledge – how to serve, how to plan an event, how to make a good PR of an event etc.

So at first we had a whole cycle of trainings, workshops and courses and during 3 months we tried to teach them everything what is needed to run a bar. This theoretical knowledge can be now used in practice in our Social Book-Bar. That was actually the main reason why we opened a bar on the terrace of our office – to offer the space where they can use what they have learnt. The bar is open on every-day basis. It is open only when there are some activities, some events initiated by young people themselves, and it is not for profit. If there is any profit it goes to the people who work there. So it is not that the bar is run by our organization. We just offer the place and our resources: the bar, the space outside, the conference room and other places, to young people to use them for their social oriented activities.

How did you choose the name of the bar?
The name in Georgian is Cigno bari, which means Book Bar. We wanted to show that we do not only have a bar but something more, and not only “a social bar”. Books evoke intellectual activities – it could be learning, studying, getting new experience and knowledge. Moreover, we also regularly work with “living books”. We organize Human Library every year for wide public, where visitors can “read” the stories of interesting people – they can ask about anything for example to the persons who identify themselves as feminist, activist, woman football player, ecologist, handicapped person and so on.

And another inspiration actually cames from our inside kitchen bar, which we made from old books. We also created a library full of manuals, documents and informations needed for youth work, non-formal education, no hate speech etc. Every volunteer and visitor of our office and the bar can use them.

Is this place available only for the Youth Association DRONI members?
When we are talking about visiting our bar and events, it is open to everyone! But if we are talking about organizing the event, so far most of the plans we have are done with DRONI members and mainly we organize events with people who were attending our “how to run a bar” trainings. We haven’t got any other proposals yet. But if there will be an idea for an interesting event, why not?

What kind of activities can be organized in the Book Bar?
It can be any kind of social activity which would be interesting for young people, but not only parties. It could be a movie screening, workshop, training course, a game tournament… We have been opened for 2 months only and our volunteers already successfully organized several events such as the official opening of a bar, 90´s party, workshops about effective communication and presentation, team work, time management and intercultural skills, screening of Polish short movies, Chess tournament or a party for singles. There are many activities and events coming, so stay in touch with our Facebook page.

Tell me five main reasons why people should visit this bar.
Only five? Okay. First of all, it is very genuine space. Everything is very simple, we hand made all the furniture and equipment ourselves, we gave an opportunity to our volunteers to paint the bar and everything. We let them to share their ideas and to use their own creativity. We used old pallets to make tables and benches to sit on. We have a great view of the city from our terrace. We have very friendly prices. You can meet a lot of new and interesting people who are ready to share their ideas and knowledge. And of course the best are the opportunities we create here to develop your own ideas. Just to give you an example, after opening party, some young people came to me and ask if it is possible to use our space – one of them was a young writer and wanted to present a book. Of course I said why not? These kind of ideas may come when you are here. The environment is very cool and inspiring. It is not easy to describe, you have to come and feel it.
